Some subjects feel uniquely Hawaiian, and for me, the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa is one of them.
Hawaiʻi's state fish has always felt larger than life. I wanted to create a piece that celebrated that energy while surrounding it with elements that immediately transport me back to the islands hibiscus blooms, plumeria flowers, tropical foliage, and the warmth of a place where nature is never far from view.
The title, Humu Harmony, reflects the balance between these elements. The fish becomes part of a larger tropical composition where color, movement, and nature work together in a way that feels joyful and alive. Rather than focusing on realism alone, I wanted this painting to capture the feeling of Hawaiʻi bright, playful, welcoming, and deeply connected to the natural world.
