Hibiscus Study No. 1 began as an exploration of color, light, and form. Rather than creating a finished botanical illustration, I focused on the lusciousness of a single hibiscus bloom, using impasto layered shades of ultra marine blue to study its structure and volume.
Painted in acrylic on handmade paper, this small work embraces simplicity. Every brushstroke was an opportunity to observe the curves, folds, and rhythm found within one of Hawaiʻi's most iconic flowers. The monochromatic palette shifts the attention away from literal color and toward texture and composition.
This original painting has since been collected into a private collection on Kauaʻi.
